Last night the Kewanee City Council made the difficult decision to raise property taxes by 4.8% in order to meet the state of Illinois mandates regarding unfunded pensions. The 4.8% increase translates to an increase of $20 for homes valued at $60,000. Had the City Council not amended the tax levy last night and not raised the Property Tax there was risk to many services the city provides as well as jobs for city workers and Steve Faber told WKEI in this interview that all of that along with budget and deficit spending played a role in the decision to vote for the increase.
