At last night’s Kewanee City Council meeting it was decided that Property Taxes in Kewanee will be going up by 4.8%. In a 5 to 0 vote, the City Council decided to raise the Property Tax in order to begin to meet the state of Illinois guidelines regarding the funding of pensions, specifically in Kewanee those related to Fire and Police. Councilman Mike Yaklich explained at last night’s meeting that while holding the line on property taxes is what the council would prefer, it is not feasible if the city wants to avoid deficit spending.
