Inside of Cerno's Bar & Grill at 213 West 3rd street it's business as usual. The beer is cold, the Meatball Sub lunch special is delicious and the conversation is as lively as ever. Outside on the other hand things are beginning to change. This week Doug Haffner, one of the Walldogs and the artist behind the beautiful Sandy's mural, has been brought on to bring as much life to the outside of building as what is happening inside. Doug says 'painting is about taking something and improving the look of it with not much cost and not much time.' Doug went on to say 'there is fine art painting and there is painting pictures and things but the mural work and even a facade-referring to the outside accents of Cerno's- with a little bit of time and a little bit of paint you can make it look 300 times better.' Doug, along with the hard working team at Crabtree Painting and the team at Home Revival, is helping one of Kewanee's most popular restaurants look better than ever and plans on having his part of this project, the golden accents and the Cerno's sign, finished by the end of the week. Crabtree Painting did the exterior painting with Home Revival helping rehab the wood and prep it for the new paint job. Doug tells me his accent work was inspired by the look of Olde English pubs as adopted by the pubs of New York City. The new look Cerno's Bar and Grill will be on display this weekend just in time to play host to the Hog Capital BBQ Challenge happening in the Cerno's parking lot beginning Friday evening with the arrival of BBQ teams from across the country and culminating on Saturday with the crowning of a pair of BBQ champions.
