Illinois State Police (ISP) officials announce the arrest of a suspect who was involved in a crash on I-90 that killed a 3-year-old child on Thursday, March 23, 2017.
A preliminary investigation of the crash indicates Matthew Munz, 49, of Zionsville, Indiana, was the driver of a black Ford Fusion traveling westbound on I-90 at mile post 47 near Huntley, Illinois. Munz failed to stop for a red Ford Taurus that had become disabled in the middle lane of traffic, striking that vehicle in the rear. The crash resulted in critical injuries to the front seat passenger of the red Ford Taurus and the death of a 3-year-old child, who was seated in the back of the vehicle. Illinois State Police Investigations assumed the case and conducted an extensive investigation which yielded evidence showing Munz was unlawfully using his cellphone moments prior to the crash.
On Tuesday, June 5, 2018, the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office approved two counts of Aggravated Unlawful Use of a Communication Device against Munz, both Class 4 Felonies. An arrest warrant was obtained for Munz with a bond of $10,000.
On Wednesday, June 6, 2018, Munz surrendered himself to Illinois State Police District 15 Investigators. Munz posted his required bond and is scheduled for a court date on July 13, 2018, at the Kane County Courthouse in St. Charles, Illinois.
