CBS Sports is reporting that the Chicago Cubs have fired manager Dale Sveum after two seasons as the Cubs skipper. Sveum is coming off a dismal last place finish of 66 and 96 with a career record of 127 and 197. Sveum's firing comes amid speculation that the Cubs will pursue former Chicago Cub catcher and soon to be free agent manager of the New York Yankees, Joe Girardi. Girardi is coming off a season in which his aging team failed to make the playoffs and will be losing closer Mariano Rivera and starter Andy Petitte to retirement while age may claim Derek Jeter and suspension take away Alex Rodriguez. Girardi will undoubtedly be the most sought after managerial candidate in baseball. As for the Cubs, with a young nucleus and a strong farm system, the Cubs managerial slot will be highly coveted.
