Cardinals, Cubs, and Sox Saturday & Sunday Recaps


After falling behind 2-0 the Pirates scored five runs in the seventh and eighth innings combined and held on for a 5-3 win over the Cardinals at Busch Stadium.  Russell Martin hit a two-run homer in the seven inning and Andrew McCutched put Pittsburgh ahead with a bases-loaded walk.  A.J. Burnett improved to 2-and-2 dealing six innings of two-run ball ball six strikeouts.  Jason Grilli nailed down his 10th save despite allowing a Carlos Beltran RBI double in the ninth.  The Pirates are 14-and-10 only a half-game behind the 14-and-9 Cards in the Central Division.  Pete Kozma had an one-run single for St. Louis in sixth inning.  Reliever Joe Kelly took the loss after Jake Westbrook pitched six perfect innings allowing six hits and striking out six.

Russell Martin homered twice and drove in three as the Pirates blanked the Cardinals 9-0 in the rubber game of a weekend series at Busch Stadium.  Garrett Jones went 3-for-4 with a homer and two runs scored, while Jose Tabata also went deep for the Bucs, who have won eight of their last 10 games.  Jeff Locke tossed seven innings of three-hit shutout ball as he improved his mark to 3-and-1.  This was Clint Hurdle's 700th career win as a manager.  Shelby Miller struck out seven over five-and-two-thirds innings, but allowed three runs to suffer the loss and fall to 3-and-2.  The Cards managed just three hits in their second straight loss.


David DeJesus came up with an RBI single in the seventh inning to give the Cubs a 3-2 win over the Marlins.  Chicago has taken the first three of the four-game set to move to 9-and-14.  Travis Wood jumped to 2-and-1 allowing two runs and striking out five across six innings.  Kevin Gregg locked up his third save with a perfect ninth inning.  Giancarlo Stanton crushed his first home run of the season in the loss.  It came in Stanton's 18th game.  Alex Sanabia took the defeat despite pitching six-and-two-thirds solid innings.  Sanabia allowed three runs and six hits, while striking out four.  Miami is a MLB-worst 5-and-19.

Giancarlo Stanton was 3-for-3 with a pair of homers and four RBI as the Marlins defeated the Cubs, 6-4.  Nick Green added a solo homer for Miami, which had lost six-of-seven.  Ricky Nolasco allowed three runs in seven innings for the win.  Steve Cishek picked up his third save.  Starlin Castro knocked in two runs and Anthony Rizzo had an RBI for Chicago, which failed to sweep the four-game series in Florida.  Carlos Villanueva gave up four runs in six frames but struck out eight in the loss.


Kelly Johnson was 4-for-5 with two RBI as the Rays took care of the White Sox, 10-4.  Ben Zobrist hit a two-run homer while Desmond Jennings added a solo shot for Tampa Bay.  James Loney was 3-for-5 with two RBI while Evan Longoria had a 4-for-6 game with an RBI and two runs scored.  Matt Moore struck out nine over six frames of one-run ball to improve to 5-and-0.  The Rays had lost three out of four.  Adam Dunn lifted a solo homer for Chicago in defeat.  Gavin Floyd gave up two runs and left in the top of the third inning with a right elbow injury.  He was charged with the loss and fell to 0-and-4.  The Sox saw a three-game winning streak end.

Ben Zobrist went 3-for-5 and knocked in the go-ahead run in the eighth inning as the Rays topped the White Sox 8-3 to earn a split in their four-game series at U.S. Cellular Field.  Matt Joyce clubbed a game-tying two-run homer in the sixth and scored three times while Jose Lobaton added a solo shot for Tampa, which has won seven of its last 10 games.  David Price struck out nine over seven innings of three-run ball for his first win of the season in three decisions.  Paul Konerko belted a two-run homer for the White Sox, who have dropped six-of-nine.  Nate Jones fell to 0-and-2 with the loss.
