Ron “Chiefy” VanDeRostyne,79, of Kewanee, died at 12:10 pm, Saturday, June 23, 2018 at Hammond Henry Hospital, Geneseo. Ron was born September 17, 1938 the son of August “Gus” and Josephine (Vandersnick) VanDeRostyne. Ron graduated from Kewanee High School in 1957. Ron married Carol L. Marshall on June 18, 1963 in Kewanee, she survives.
Ron is also survived by two sons, Kurt VanDeRostyne, Williamsfield, IL, Kirby VanDeRostyne, Kewanee; one daughter, Kris (Matt) Bennett, Neponset; six grandchildren, Miranda, Ethan, Tyler, Cody, Cole, and Hope; special granddaughter, Emma Brants; four great grandchildren, Stella, Ryker, Hunter, and Luke; one sister, Ruth Rossow, Carlisle, PA; a special aunt, Sister Norberta “Betty” Vandersnick, who is a Benedictine Nun in Rock Island; several nieces, nephews and cousins. Ron was preceded in death by his parents; step father, George Compton; and one brother, Robert VanDeRostyne.
Ron served his country in the United States Navy and was stationed in Okinawa, Japan. He retired from Compaction America (Hyster) in 1998. Ron was a member of Visitation Catholic Church, and the Knights of Columbus. Ron was an avid hunter and fisherman. He was also a member of the Hook and Bullet Club, Victoria, IL. He was an avid Cubs and Bears fan. He loved going to the Casino, Horse Races, dancing, and spending time at his daughter’s house, fishing at the Bennett pond. He loved his Labradors, Big Girl and Gunner. Ron especially enjoyed spending time with his family.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 am on Thursday, June 28, 2018 at Visitation Catholic Church, Kewanee. Father Johndamaseni Zilimu will officiate. Military rites will be accorded by the Kewanee Veterans Council at the church. A private family burial will take place at a later date. Visitation will be from 9:00 am until the time of service at the Schueneman-Tumbleson Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to St. Jude’s Run or the Kewanee Food Pantry.
