Mary Katherine “Katie” Johnson, 80, of Kewanee, died Monday, January 8, 2018 at 9:49 pm. Katie was born November 25, 1937 in Kewanee, the daughter of Albert and Patricia (Boss) DeConinck. Katie enjoyed cheerleading in High School, graduating from Kewanee High School in 1955. Katie married Bud Johnson on July 7, 1972 in Kewanee, he survives.
Katie is survived by one daughter, Christina (Peter) Tanzillo, Kewanee; two sons, Michael Quagliano, Chicago, Nick (Paula) Johnson, Kewanee; seven grandchildren, Michele, Amy, Trisha, Amber, Lucas, Quinton, and Riley; eight great-grandchildren, Maddux, Rocco, Luca, Freddie, Bianca, Gianna, Greyson, Simone, and another boy on the way; several nieces and nephews; and brother Albert (Karen) DeConinck, Kewanee. She was preceded in death by her parents; and sister, Patricia Shambaugh.
Katie helped on the Wethersfield playground, she started off managing the Wanee Theatre, and the Apollo Theatre in Princeton, later owning them. She was the owner of Katie’s House of Steaks. She was active with the Muscular Dystrophy Association for 25+ years. She was the Hog Day’s Parade Grand Marshall and won an Outstanding Citizen Meritorious Award. She was also a National Award winner from Disney, for Toy Story, and was a Bureau County State Attorney winner for the Christmas Toy Drive. She enjoyed building floats, collecting angels, praying hands, and hog merchandise. She also loved spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 5-7 pm on Friday, January 12, 2018 at Schueneman-Tumbleson Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 10:00 am, Saturday, January 13, 2018 at the funeral home. Father Chris Haake will officiate. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the family.
