Joseph Louis “Joe” Van Damme, 73, of Prophetstown, passed away Saturday, May 17th, 2014 at his home, surrounded by his family. A funeral service celebrating his life will be held at 10:00am on Thursday May 22nd at Vandemore Funeral Home, Ltd., Atkinson. Father S. Stephen Engelbrecht will officiate. Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Hooppole. A visitation for Joe will be from 4-7pm on Wednesday May 21st at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Hooppole.
Joe was born on March 16, 1941 in Kewanee, IL, the son of Louis and Margaret (VanHecker) Van Damme. He was united in marriage to Sheila “Jenny” Rains on July 29th, 1978 in Geneseo. She preceded him in death on May 26, 2008. Joe farmed in the rural Hooppole area his entire life. He also worked for John Deere and Kewanee Boiler. Joe was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Hooppole. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and collecting hats.
He is survived by his special friend Letha Mungor, Walnut, IL; daughters: Lorie De La Rosa, Peoria, AZ, Rhonda Rains, Moline, IL; sons: Bruce Rains, Geneseo, IL, Randy Van Damme, Kewanee, IL, Rick “Twin” Van Damme, Annawan, IL; 4 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren; brothers: Hank Van Damme, East Moline, IL, Art Van Damme, Atkinson, IL, Jerry Van Damme, Annawan, IL, Mark Van Damme, Kansas City, MO.
He was preceded in death by his parents; 2 sisters: Sandra Hill and Delores Rakestraw; 2 brothers: Don Rose and Tom Van Damme.
