Michael John “Mick” Ptasnik, 74, of Kewanee, Il. died at 12:20 P.M. on Easter Sunday, April 20, 2014 at his home. Mick was born December 30, 1939 in Kewanee, Il the son of John and Helen (Pilarski) Ptasnik. Mick graduated from Kewanee High School in 1957. He joined the U.S. Marine Corps in 1957 and was discharged in 1963. Mick would later earn an associated degree from Black Hawk College East Campus. He worked as a printer. In November of 1973 he began his career with the City of Kewanee Police Department as a patrolman. Working his way up through the ranks he was named Chief of Police in 2002 and retired in April of 2005.
Mick was a member of Holy Trinity Polish National Catholic Church in Kewanee, the Quad City Council of Police Chiefs, the Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police, served on the Board of Directors for the Good Shepard Foundation and the Henry County Safe House, Kewanee Drug and Alcohol Task force, was Past Commander of the Tri county Detachment Marine Corps League and Past Commander of the American Legion Post #31.
Mick married Stella Jackson Kirman on May 16, 1998. She survives along with two sons Tom (Jennifer) Ptasnik of Walnut, Il., Derek (Kathleen) Creamer of Ft. Myers, Fl., a daughter Lisa (Lonny) Bryant I of Peoria, Il., step children Tammy (Chris) Hatland of Tipton, Ia. and Jay (Amy) Kirman of Dubuque, Ia.
Grandchildren are John, Kaitlyn, Karlee and Kyle Ptasnik, Lonnie (Holly) Bryant II and their children Alyssa, Lonny III and Bradley Michael Bryant, Chad Creamer, Tyler and Ashley Hatland, Jacob, Jack and Alex Kirman and Stephanie Davis. Also surviving is a brother Joseph (Patti) Ptasnik of Dayton, Oregon, a sister Janet (John) Balsis of Rancho Santa Marguerita, Ca. and his dogs Aggie and Dukie.
Mick was preceded in death by his parents and a son Glen.
A Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, April 23, 2014 at Holy Trinity Polish National Catholic Church in Kewanee. Fr. Jerry Rafalko will officiate. Cremation will follow the services. Inurnment with military honors by the Kewanee Veterans Council will be at a later date in the Pleasant View Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5- 8 P.M. Tuesday, April 22, 2014 at the Schueneman-Tumbleson Funeral Home, Kewanee where the rosary will be recited at 7:45 P.M.
