Thomas H. Zwica, 69, of Geneseo, formerly of La Salle, passed away Thursday, February 13, 2014 peacefully at home surrounded by his family. Funeral services celebrating his life will be at 10:30 AM Wednesday, February 19, 2014 at St. Bede Chapel in Peru, IL. Per his request, cremation rites will be accorded after the services and inurnment will take place at a later date. Visitation for Tom will be held from 4:00-7:00 PM Tuesday, February 18th at Vandemore Funeral Home, Geneseo, IL. Memorials may be left to St. Bede Academy.
Tom was born February 29, 1944 in La Salle, IL the son of Henry and Evelyn (Maurer) Zwica. He was a 1961 graduate of St. Bede Academy in Peru, IL and graduated from Northern Illinois University in 1966 with a Bachelor of Science in one of the first ever graduating classes of computer science. Tom married Julie Flaherty on September 3, 1966. His working career included The Boeing Company in Seattle, WA, Associate Professor at Blackhawk College, Moline, IL, and Numeridex Inc., Wheeling, IL. In 1986 he started his own company, Interactive Design Consultants.
Rarely seen without a camera, Tom had a passion for photography, with a special focus on family, aviation, bald eagles, and events in his community, Geneseo, IL. Tom was a private pilot, a member of Gen-Air, Inc., and a member of the Quiet Birdman. One of his proudest moments was being named a USAF Honorary Thunderbird in 2003. Tom was very active in his community, having served on many boards including the Geneseo Chamber of Commerce, Gen-Air, Inc., GEEE, Farmers Mutual Electric Company, Wells Fargo, Inc., TLC, GIFT, Jo-Carroll Energy, and Prairie Power, Inc.
Tom is survived by his wife: Julie; sons: Timothy Zwica of Austin, TX, James Zwica of Manila, Philippines: daughter: Lynn Zwica of Ann Arbor, MI; daughters in law: Kathryn Zwica of Chicago, IL and Manvi Zwica of Troy, MI; 2 grandchildren: Kyle and Lexington Zwica: sister: Bonnie Pomatto: and many nieces and nephews.
Tom was preceded in death by his parents and sister: Jeannine Kinkin.
The family would like to thank Dr. Costas Constantinou and his staff, the oncology floor and transitional care unit of Trinity Rock Island, and Heartland Hospice for their excellent and compassionate care of Tom during his courageous battle with brain cancer.
