Toulon – Ernest Greg Rice, 87, of Toulon, passed away Friday, February 14, 2014, at Hillcrest Home in Geneseo.
He was born August 23, 1926, in Kewanee, to William Rollin and Elizabeth Frances Rice. He married Elizabeth “Bette” Mehaffey on March 5, 1949, in Zion.
She survives, along with their children, Ann (Dave) Rice-Johnson of Highland Ranch, Co, Lynn (Martin) Frederiksen of Moline, Tom (Debbie) Rice of Colona, and Jamie (Kelly) Rice of Wyoming; six grandchildren, Laura (Sam) VanVuuren, Ellen (Andrew) Friedman, Craig Frederiksen, Andrea, Royal (Megan), and Joel Rice; three great-grandchildren, Renee, Audrey, and Elise VanVuuren; one brother, Rollin Rice of Mesa, AZ. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Greg farmed in Stark County until his retirement in 1989. He was a WWII U.S. Army Veteran, and a member of the Toulon American Legion Post #416, and the Stark County Farm Bureau. He was a former member of the Stark County School Board. Greg enjoyed gardening, and playing piano.
He was a member of the First Congregational Church in Toulon, where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, February 20, 2014. Rev. Wayne McLeod will officiate. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial with military honors will be in Rock Island National Cemetery. Haskell-Hott Funeral Home in Toulon is in charge of arrangements.
