Mabel I. Steward of Zephyrhills, Florida, formerly of Galva, Illinois, passed away on October 22, 2013 at age 90 after a short illness. The daughter of the late Hilma and Charles Johnson, Swedish immigrants, she grew up on the family farm in Lafayette, Illinois graduating from Lafayette High School at the age of 16. She began a lifelong career as a waitress in many local establishments throughout Henry County. She married and had two children, whom she adored. Mrs. Steward was a Stanley dealer for many years and made their house a home, sometimes working 2 and 3 jobs. She also worked for the former Galva Foundry. She married Herschel Steward, a Galva farmer in 1988 and enjoyed all of the animals on the farm until Herschel retired. They wintered in Florida and eventually moved there full time. She was always smiling and joking with her friends at the Sleepy Hollow Mobile Estates and loved them all, dearly. Herschel passed away in September of 2003. Her memory will be kept alive by her loving son and daughter, David J Howerton of Canastota, NY and Shirley I. Guss of East Galesburg, Illinois, David's wife Lorraine and Shirley's Fiance' Roger Wheelhouse, her loving granddaughter and grandson, Angela and Mark Guss, both of Pekin, Illinois and several great grandchildren. Mrs. Steward was a long time member of the Loyal Order of the Moose. The family would like to thank her friends for their support during this difficult time and also the Seminary Village staff for their tender care during her last days.Burial will be in the Galva Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
