Margaret Mary Smith, 99, a long-time resident of Atkinson passed away Saturday, September 14, 2013 at Good Samaritan Village, Geneseo with her family at her bedside. A funeral mass celebrating Margaret’s life will be held 10:00 AM Tuesday, September 17, 2013 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Atkinson. Rev. S. Stephen Engelbrecht will celebrate. Burial will follow in St. Anthony’s Cemetery in Atkinson. Visitation for Margaret will be 5-7 PM Monday, September 16 at Vandemore Funeral Home in Atkinson where a rosary will be recited at 4:30 PM. Memorials may be left to the Margaret Smith Memorial Fund, to be distributed among the missions Margaret supported.
Margaret was born December 6, 1913 in rural Atkinson, IL the daughter of Peter and Mary Louise (Lievens) VanHerzeele. She was united in marriage to Harvey Christian Smith on February 14, 1938 in Atkinson, IL. He preceded her in 1961. Margaret was a receptionist in the office of Dr. Juan Puentes in Atkinson for 17 years, but foremost she was a homemaker and a loving mother and grandmother.
Margaret was a member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Atkinson and the Church Altar and Rosary Society. She belonged to the Lady Foresters of Atkinson, Atkinson Women’s Club, Atkinson War Mothers, and was past president of the American Legion Auxiliary. She was a former Cub Scout Den Mother and 4-H Leader. Margaret was an avid gardener and loved to share her garden produce and flowers.
Survivors include 1 daughter: Julianne (Arnold) Schmid of Geneseo; 1 son: Harvey Daniel Smith of Geneseo; 10 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, 3 step-great-grandchildren, and 5 great-great-grandchildren; and 1 sister: Mary Lou DeCausemaker of Geneseo.
Margaret was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, 1 daughter: Maribeth Blohm, 2 brothers, and 5 sisters.
