John C. May, 66, of Rock Island, formerly of Springfield, IL and Shelbyville, MO, died Friday, June 14, 2013 at his residence. Cremation has been accorded and a memorial service will take place at a later date in Missouri. Stackhouse-Moore Funeral Services, Cambridge, is assisting the family with local arrangements. Memorials may be made to the Shelby County Food Pantry.John Charles May was born June 29, 1946 in Springfield, IL, the son of Marvin R. and Lillian J. Doenges May. He graduated from Glenwood High School in Chatham in1964, received his bachelor’s degree from Western Illinois University at Macomb in 1969 and his M.S. degree in history from the University of Illinois at Springfield in 1973. His marriage to Patricia Pickens took place on June 1, 1968 in Cambridge.
He taught English History at Glenwood High School from January 1969 until retiring in 2001. The family lived in Springfield until 2002 when they moved to Shelbyville, MO. The couple moved to Rock Island in 2012. John was a member of the Open Door Church in Shelbyville. His hobbies included fishing, hunting, motorcycling, reading, soccer, black powder shooting, historical reenacting, tinsmithing, and sailing.
Those surviving are his wife, Pat, Rock Island, a daughter and son-in-law, Jessica Anne May and Keith Thompson, New York City, a son and daughter-in-law, Matthew Robert and Elizabeth Noel (Brooks) May, Suffolk, VA, two grandchildren, Erin Kiersten May and Eamon Ross May, Suffolk, a sister, Margery Jean May, Springfield, and a brother-in-law, Ron Warning, Port Charlotte, FL. His parents and a sister preceded him in death.
