Arnold “Arnie” L. Smith, 73, of Kewanee, passed away, surrounded by his family at 9:32 PM, Sunday, May 26, 2013 at OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria after having lived life to the fullest.Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM, Friday, May 31 at the First Presbyterian Church in Kewanee. Rev. Dr. Dale Dykstra will officiate. Visitation will be held from 5:00-8:00 PM, Thursday, May 30 at the church. Burial will be in Evergreen Memory Gardens in rural Kewanee. Memorials may be directed to the First Presbyterian Church or to the Kewanee Food Pantry. Rux Funeral Home in Kewanee is in charge of arrangements.
He was born March 29, 1940 in Peabody, MA, the son of Freddie Edward and Orie Marion (Webber) Smith. He married Maria B. Powell on May 31, 1959 in Polo, IL and she preceded him in death on July 4, 2003. He later married Wendy Weeks-Feldner on February 17, 2007. She survives, as do five children, Dawn (Brian) Currier of Kewanee, Edward (Julie) Smith of Des Moines, IA, Elaine Smith and her fiancé, Ken Ward of Tampa, FL, Seth (Katie) Feldner of Wautoma, WI and Hannah Feldner of Washington DC, three brothers, Maurice “Jim”, Alexander “Van” and Richard “Dick”, five sisters, Mary, Alma “Maye”, Wilma, Betty and Deloris “Dolly”, nine grandchildren, Amber (Jayson) Garcia, R. Dean (Sarah) Jones, Brian (Michelle) Currier, Amie (Justin) Davis, Skye, Shaelyn and Summer Smith and Travis and Brooke Ashley, thirteen great grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by his parents, three bothers, Lawrence “Pat”, Robert “Bob” and Freddie and a sister, Janice.
Arnie graduated from Kewanee High School in 1959. He worked at Lauterborn Auto, was a Division Manager for Sears, Store Manager for Montgomery Wards and Grounds and Maintenance Supervisor at Black Hawk East for 19 years, retiring in 2002. He was a 50+ year member of the First Presbyterian Church where he was Clerk of Session and an Elder. He loved gatherings with his siblings, family and friends. He enjoyed his pets, John Wayne movies, doing yard work and creative woodworking projects.
