Arlene May Bates, 87, of Galva, passed away at 6:17 PM, Thursday, May 9, 2013 in the emergency room at Kewanee Hospital.Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM, Monday, May 13 at Rux Funeral Home in Galva. Pastor Russell Collister will officiate. Visitation will be held from 4:00-7:00 PM, Sunday, May 12 at the funeral home. Burial will be in Galva Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the First United Methodist Church in Galva or to the Galva Food Pantry.
She was born September 7, 1925 in Kewanee, the daughter of James R. and Anna A. (Fahnstrom) Huffman. She married Thomas F. “Tom” Bates on September 15, 1945 in Kewanee and he preceded her in death on June 20, 2011. Survivors include a son, Dan (Pam) Bates of Galva, a daughter, Bonnie (Dave) DeMay of Galva, four grandchildren, Leslie (Chad) Rogers, Don (Kenna) DeMay, Jason (Melissa) Bates and Eric Bates (and Rina Martinez),ten great grandchildren, Ashley (Shaun) DeMay-Hansard, Emily and Drew DeMay, Tristan, Tressa, Trey and Kendall Rogers and Carter, Cooper and Cameron Bates and a great-great grandson, Jaydon Hansard. She was also preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Robert Huffman.
Arlene graduated from Galva High School in 1946. In her early years she had worked at the Galva Creamery and then later at the Antique Traders Magazine in Kewanee and the Farm House Tea Room. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Galva and a former member of the Home Extension and the Galva Women’s Club. She enjoyed gardening , flowers, reading, camping, visiting with neighbors and having lunch with her classmates from the Class of 1946. She especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.
