Illinois State Police in District 7 are investigating an early Saturday morning accident that claimed the life of a Wataga woman.
Reports indicate that a 1999 GMC Suburban, driven by 32 year old Cory L. Ward of Wataga was traveling south on U.S. Route 150 at the Gates Bridge at a high rate of speed at approximately 12:30 Saturday morning, when the driver failed to negotiate a curve which caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle.
The vehicle then struck a guardrail on the west side shoulder and became airborne.
The vehicle travelled over a set of railroad tracks below and came to a final rest on the wooded south embankment in an upright position.
The driver, 32 year old Cory Ward and a passenger, 26 year old Olivia Stewart both of Wataga were transported from the scene and flown to St. Francis Hospital in Peoria where Stewart was pronounced dead by the Peoria County Coroner’s Office.
Ward was severely injured in the crash and was charged with failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.
