A Kewanee woman has been charged with Class 4 felony aggravated cruelty to animals following the deaths of 12 dogs. The Kewanee Police Department responded to an alert from postal carriers on Tuesday about a suspicious odor coming from a residence in the 400 block of E. 10th street in Kewanee.
Once inside the residence, police discovered that 12 small dogs known as Pomeranians had all perished.
Police then arrested 42 year old Marta Alice Ceja of Kewanee on preliminary charges of Aggravated Animal Cruelty and took her to the Henry County Jail.
Formal charges have been filed in Henry County Circuit Court including Class 4 felony aggravated cruelty to animals, Class A misdemeanor cruelty to animals, a Class B charge of misdemeanor neglect and a Class 4 felony theft charge for possession of some government signs.
According to the charges filed in court, Ceja knowingly failed to feed the 12 dogs which led to their deaths.
