Governor Pat Quinn joined Illinois State Fire Marshal Larry Matkaitis to announce that a total of 96 fire departments across the state will share 2-million dollars in grant funds to purchase small equipment, protective clothing, breathing apparatus and other tools for firefighters. The grants are funded through a percentage of all fire insurance sold in Illinois. Departments were eligible for grants up to 26-thousand dollars. According to Fire Marshal Matkaitis, with shrinking municipal budgets, the Small Equipment Grant Program has evolved into a critical resource to assist local fire departments to acquire basic equipment that meets current safety standards. In Henry County, the Kewanee Fire Department received a grant of 17-thousand-940-dollars.
