Director John Holton has announced the Senior Health Insurance Program, also known as SHIP, is now administered by the Illinois Department on Aging. SHIP is a free statewide health insurance counseling service for Medicare beneficiaries and their caregivers. The program was previously under the Department of Insurance, but was transferred to Aging by executive order. According to Director Holton the Department on Aging is well positioned to support the expanding role of SHIP. He says SHIP counseling is a natural extension of the department’s existing services. SHIP is not affiliated with any insurance company, and counselors make sure seniors and people with disabilities on Medicare are aware of options that can save them money. Illinois’ SHIP program has been recognized for exemplary performance and outreach strategies, and last year ranked number one nationwide for most improved overall SHIP performance and ranked seventh among the 54 SHIP’s nationwide.
