First, I’d like to apologize to the Galva fans and your listeners for not participating in the Coaches’ Corner this spring. I’m sure everyone in the area knows, I had a very young, inexperienced team this season. We were primarily focused on the basics and fundamentals of the game and not results. I simply didn’t feel it necessary to waste your time each Saturday when there wasn’t much to say nor much difference from week to week.
With that being said though, I would now like to publicly recognize my players and coaches. They definitely deserve it. This group of girls were thrust into a tough situation at no fault of their own and they handled it very well. They learned a great deal of softball, gained life lessons and had so much fun doing it. After all, aren’t these three things what youth sports are all about? So, even if our record doesn’t show it, I consider this season a success. It can only help these girls in the future and they are better, stronger young ladies for having endured it.
The team consisted of only two upperclassmen, both seniors, five sophomores and four freshmen. The seniors are Marie Marshall and Megan Nordstrom. They provided outstanding, positive leadership to their young teammates. Although frustrated at times they never showed it, successfully handling things in an adult manner beyond their years. Marie worked extremely hard to even return and play her senior season as she had major surgery on a serious hamstring injury last October. Megan looked forward to her last year, stepping up to play third base very well after not seeing much playing time her previous three seasons. This tells me their senior seasons really meant something very special to them. Thank you ladies! The sophomores are Tressa Rogers, Emma Lindquist, Elly Olsen, Paige Smith and Julia Stahl. The freshmen are Bailey Bates, Abby Jones, Autumn Puckett and Taylor Warner. Thank you to them as well!
Next, I would be remiss without thanking my two assistant coaches and faithful manager. They are my daughter, Lindsey Osborne, Chad Gibbs and senior Rosie Howell. All three did tremendous work. Lindsey with the pitchers and catchers and as bench coach. Chad as the hitting instructor and first base coach. Rosie was my right hand and often knew what I needed before I did! A huge thank you to all three for their contributions and for keeping me in check and sane this season!
Finally, to you Bob, a heartfelt thank you as always. Your coverage and support of high school sports in the area is top notch. The communities, schools, players, coaches and fans truly appreciate it. There are no two ways about it, you’re simply the best!
